Chapter One

*An English translation is available at the end of this post.

From May 6 to May 20, I got sick.

It was a severe allergic reaction. I went to the emergency room and was admitted to the hospital.

I spent five long, boring days there. Everything happened so suddenly that I hadn't brought anything with me. Every day I lay in bed, watching my skin peel and the allergic rash slowly change, applying medication, and waiting for the next meal.

Later, I was put on steroids. They made me feel strangely energetic. My mind never stopped for a single moment.

Life is truly unpredictable.

The last time I was hospitalized was in 2017. I needed braces, which meant my wisdom teeth had to be removed. They couldn't be extracted in the outpatient clinic, so I was admitted for surgery under general anesthesia.

At that time, I was in the second year of my master's program. I stayed in the hospital by myself, and my lovely classmates came to visit me—and my swollen, puffy face.

This time, no one came.

It seemed that everyone who knew I was in the hospital was somewhere other than Omaha.

So no one came.

I've always felt that the three years I spent in Guangzhou for graduate school were the best years of my life in China.

2016 to 2019 now feels like a past life.

This section has been here ever since I created this website. I'd like to use it to look back on memories from the distant East. Given the theme of this website, I suppose I should start in 2011, when I began my first year of university.

In the summer of 2011, I graduated from high school. I ranked in the top 0.2% of liberal arts students in Sichuan Province. Liberal arts students don't have many choices when it comes to majors. After weighing the pros and cons, I chose to learn a practical skill—Traditional Chinese Medicine. Later, after I entered university, one of my professors said that it was an art.

Whatever it is, based on the information I found at the time, studying it meant that, at the very least, I could make a living anywhere in the world——I visited Professor Xiaoxiong Shen in Los Angeles this March, and he said the same thing.

In September 2011, I arrived on campus.

My university was one of the so-called "Old Four" schools—the first group of Traditional Chinese Medicine universities established in the People's Republic of China: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu. Mine was in Chengdu.

The university has always been proud of being one of the "Old Four." But in terms of research output and financial resources, it is no longer among the top four. As for name recognition, most people only know Beijing and Shanghai. Very few have heard of Guangzhou. I usually tell them it's near Hong Kong, and then they more or less understand.

So... what should I write about next?

Maybe my freshman-year classes. What courses I took. Or perhaps the Traditional Health Preservation course.

See you in the next chapter.
